Walkabout Barber brings connection and community spirit to Mackay

Last week, the Walkabout Barber bus brought a powerful three-day initiative to Mackay, fostering connection, inclusion, and community spirit. Thanks to Mackay’s own Jeanette Morgan, who was instrumental in bringing this vital service to North Queensland, the event welcomed a diverse range of individuals. This included people experiencing homelessness, those living with disability, local community members, visitors travelling Australia, and even tourists from Spain. Over the three days, more than 360 services were delivered.
The Walkabout Barber team created a safe and welcoming environment, enabling people to connect, share stories, and feel genuinely seen and valued. Beyond haircuts, the initiative featured community BBQs, wellbeing conversations, inspirational talks, and support from local organisations, enriching the experience for everyone involved. This initiative underscores how a seemingly simple act, like a haircut, can profoundly restore confidence, dignity, and connection. The fact that one of the very first people to use the service was a local homeless man highlights the core principle of inclusion: ensuring everyone feels welcome, respected, and cared for.
The Walkabout Barber’s mission extends beyond appearances; it is about breaking down barriers, supporting mental health and wellbeing, and advancing reconciliation through authentic conversations and genuine human connection. For many, stepping onto the bus meant feeling heard, accepted, and an integral part of the community, creating an impact that will resonate far beyond those three days.
We extend our sincere gratitude to all who contributed to the success of this event: Richard & Rochelle for ensuring smooth operations; Kinetic for servicing and detailing the bus, and generously providing two new tyres; Statewide Industries for supplying a vehicle for the team; and our IDEAL Placements team and participants, who supported the BBQ and engaged with the community throughout. Mackay truly exemplified community at its finest.
