Rory’s Determination Leads to Army Electrician Apprenticeship

Rory, a determined 21-year-old from Bowen, has embarked on an exciting new chapter, securing an Electrician apprenticeship with the Australian Defence Force Army. His journey, supported by IDEAL Placements’ Transition to Work (TTW) program, highlights his unwavering commitment and the power of tailored support.

When Rory joined IDEAL Placements on 21 March 2025, he had a clear goal: to join the Australian Defence Force. Despite living in a small, out-of-town community and facing travel challenges, Rory’s enthusiasm never wavered. His Employment Consultant, Jody Townsend, worked closely with him, providing crucial support including driving lessons to help him get licensed, assistance with drafting a strong resume and cover letter, and guidance on online job applications and career exploration. Rory initially applied for a Carpenter apprenticeship and was unsuccessful, but his resilience shone through as he reapplied for an Electrician role.

His persistence paid off. Rory successfully navigated a series of assessments, including psychiatric, fitness, and aptitude tests, demonstrating his readiness for the demanding role. In April, he began his initial training in Mudgee, New South Wales, before returning to Townsville, Queensland, to commence his apprenticeship. This achievement is a testament to Rory’s dedication and the comprehensive support he received, helping him to build skills, confidence, and a pathway to meaningful work.

IDEAL Placements is incredibly proud of Rory’s accomplishments. He now stands with pride, his confidence visibly grown, as he builds a fulfilling career with the Australian Defence Force. We are committed to working alongside individuals like Rory, helping them overcome barriers and achieve their employment goals, creating real impact in our local communities.
